StreetsblogMASS surveyed several other pedestrian bridges over other DCR roadways and found extensive deferred maintenance issues on many of those structures as well.
The agency in charge of the dangerous stairway appears to be the Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR), the agency that controls the adjacent Columbia Road overpass and Old Colony Avenue.
In 2015, the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation initiated a $500,000 study to improve safety on its park roadways. But the study was never published, and six years later, the agency is stonewalling efforts to find out what happened.
"The study will prioritize infrastructure designs that meet the City and Commonwealth’s net-zero emissions targets, including maximizing opportunities for sustainable transportation such as walking, bicycling, and transit use," according to the press statement.
The project would reallocate two of the street's four motor vehicle lanes to create additional greenspace plus a dedicated pathway for bikes and pedestrians.
